Involvement Insecurity

I have a theory.

And the longer I sit with it, the more convinced that I am of it.

I believe that when you doubt God’s involvement in your life, that actually shows up as deep insecurity.

A.W. Tozer once said, “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.”

How does that hit you? Does it seem dramatic? Does it seem a bit of hyperbole? I actually think it’s extremely accurate and revealing. What comes to your mind when you think about God? Sit with it for a second, it’s more honest than you think. Don’t just give a churchy answer, but honestly think about what comes to your mind.

Do you see God as angry? Disappointed with you? Just your best friend? All about love but no place for discipline? Is He a pushover? How do you see God when you think about Him? This is actually the most important thing about you because this reveals the deepest belief that you have at the very center of everything. How you see God, impacts how you interact with Him (or avoid Him) in your day to day life.

All of that being said, if you are reading this and what comes to mind for you when you think about God is uncertainty about His involvement in your life and what that actually looks like, I would push and assume that your doubt in God’s involvement manifests itself as insecurity in your life.

We will never fully understand what God’s involvement (or sometimes lack of involvement) fully looks like, because God isn’t a formula that can be solved and figured out completely. But if we are unable to trust God and walk in faith with Him in the mystery of who He is, then insecurity will consume us completely. If you are reading this and you have never been able to find confidence, security, or a real sense of identity, I would encourage you to dig past the surface and begin to evaluate what you really believe about how God is involved in our day to day lives.

And if you come to the conclusion that you aren’t sure if God is present in your life every day (no shame here) it is very possible, that that is the very reason why you feel so insecure in everything that you do and say. Because you are unsure about the Creator of the universe and how He shows up in the good, the bad, and the ugly.

As we close this article (that hopefully has you thinking) I want to end with some words from Jesus Himself. Jesus says…

“32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

John 8:32

Let’s break this down very quickly. When we know the truth (which is knowing God for who He really is, not our preconceived notions of Him) we experience a sense of freedom. We rest in the fact that God is present, powerful, and playing the long game of making all things new, wiping away every tear, and destroying sin once and for all for those who believe in Him (and belief in this will give us a sense of confidence, hope, stability, and identity unlike anything else while will make us feel more secure in ourselves, because we’re secure in Him).

The Practice

THE PRACTICE

ZH Challenge

Every day this week, remind yourself: “God is present with me right now.”

In moments of insecurity, pause and bring your thoughts back to that truth.

Bible Reading Plan (5 Days)

Day 1 — John 8:32

Day 2 — Isaiah 41:10

Day 3 — Psalm 139:7–10

Day 4 — Hebrews 13:5

Day 5 — Romans 8:38–39

Reflect

What do you actually believe about how involved God is in your life right now?

Take One Step

Write down one insecurity you’ve been carrying and replace it with a truth about who God is and how He is present with you.
