The Renovation

C.S. Lewis wrote in his book, Mere Christianity:
“Imagine yourself as a living house. God comes in to rebuild that house. At first, perhaps, you can understand what He is doing. He is getting the drains right and stopping the leaks in the roof and so on; you knew that those jobs needed doing and so you are not surprised. But presently He starts knocking the house about in a way that hurts abominably and does not seem to make any sense. What on earth is He up to? The explanation is that He is building quite a different house from the one you thought of - throwing out a new wing here, putting on an extra floor there, running up towers, making courtyards. You thought you were being made into a decent little cottage: but He is building a palace. He intends to come and live in it Himself.”
This is what change looks like. A picture of someone (God) coming into a house (your life) and slowly but surely changing everything. Some changes are expected and make sense, while others hurt a lot and cost you more than you could’ve ever imagined.
But little by little, room by room, change by change, He’s making you into everything that you’re called to be.
And why should we expect anything less than a full blown renovation? Paul makes it pretty clear in 1st Corinthians when he says,
19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20
Everything that you have and everything that you are, belongs to God. The process of change or sanctification (which is us becoming more and more like Jesus) is when we allow more and more of our thoughts, actions, and decisions to be guided and influenced by God. It’s when we little by little release our grip of our lives into His hands, because we know that it ultimately belongs there anyway.
There’s a lot more I want to say, but I will keep this short. Because as of this week, July 2026, our brand new podcast, The Renovation, is out! Every week we are diving into this very idea of small changes or nudges that can push us towards who God wants us to be. And it’s going to be awesome.
Listen to the first episode. Share it with someone. And let’s let God remove what doesn’t belong, and rebuild what does.
